I’ve started a series of great things you can find online for free. In the past few weeks, I’ve written about:

Today I’m going to cover some great resources for free – and reliable – health information you can find in Web sites, Twitter feeds, and apps. These aren’t a replacement for a medical professional, but they can certainly be helpful. If you haven’t already, check out Part 1 for information on breast cancer, diabetes, and emotional problems.

For general health

  • MedlinePlus. This is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine. It covers pretty much any health topic you can think of as well as information on drugs, herbs and supplements.
  • Follow Harvard Health on Twitter. They describe themselves as “Authoritative health information from Harvard Medical School, drawing on the expertise of our 8,000 faculty physicians and world-famous affiliated hospitals.”
  • My Health Record Keeper.  This app provides an easy way to keep track of your personal health information.

For heart health

  • Hearthub from the American Heart Association. This web site contains information on everything from warning signs to what your risk is, to healthy recipes.
  • Follow Heart RN on Twitter. This feed has medical news updates, expert chats, and answers to follower’s questions from the Cleveland Clinic Heart and Vascular Institute.
  • Heart Healthy 2. This app is described as “The Healthy Heart app is a prevention / monitoring app for high blood pressure / high cholesterol patients who are at risk of heart diseases, as well as their caretakers.”

 For Healthy Eating

  • There are tons out there. One place you can start is Live Better America. This Web site has recipes, as well as information on fitness and relationships and how they contribute to your overall health.
  • Try following Jamie Oliver on Twitter. Jamie is known for his quest to help everyone – but particularly children – eat better.
  • Like Web sites, there are plenty of options for healthy eating apps. One option is the MyFitnessPal Mobile Apps which are available on both Android and Iphone. You can use it to track your food and exercise from anywhere.

Do you ever get health information online? Do you have any Web sites, twitter feeds, or apps for these topics that I haven’t listed?
